Look at the number brunching

by Priya Bala | Editor, PoshVine

If you love cocktail-laced conversations, grazing at a leisurely pace and long afternoons that melt into sundowner time, then nothing will please you as the Sunday brunch does.  Of course, we take liberties with the terms; in Bangalore it isn’t strictly the hour between  breakfast and lunch and we scarcely order eggs Benedict or waffles at brunch. Our version is more in the nature of an early lunch that goes on forever. Such delicious decadence!

Last Sunday I went to the brunch at Bene, the smart Italian restaurant at the Sheraton Bangalore. And it reminded me again of what a lovely way to spend a weekend afternoon this is! The Bene version is packed with Italian dishes – rows upon rows of antipasti, salads, a stack of seafood, including oysters and lobster, and a station that served melted provolone (I made several trips to this one), breads and desserts in delectable mini portions.

You can choose to sit in air-conditioned comfort or the pleasant outdoors. There’s also an elegantly appointed private dining room for a large-ish group. We chose the outdoors, sitting under an umbrella and sipping perfectly made sangria And, oh, the mango bellinis were splendid, too. You take your time nibbling through the parma-wrapped melon, the prosciutto, the duck salad, the well-made pizzas that come to your table. As do the main courses.  These were spectacularly good – from the simple crisp fried sardines to the snapper on spaghetti in a summery tomato sauce. The lamb shanks and the duck were flawless.

And then you linger on some more and taste the desserts, vowing you will be on a diet for the rest of the week. But what the heck, this is Sunday and the discipline and the detox of the working week can wait.

Our other fave brunches in town are at

Shiro: A superb Oriental spread and a great al fresco setting.

Olive Beach: Just the place to kick back, get ever so slightly drunk, and tuck into some super food.

Citrus at The Leela: The trend-setter in Sunday brunches, still holds its own with its style and substance. Its up for renovation now, but you can still enjoy the same spread at an al fresco setting.
